How to treat Teak furniture | restore or patina

Follow our professional tips to treat Teak furniture.

How to treat teak furniture?

Show you teak furniture some love.
One of the most durable and easiest wood to look after, teak is a dense tropical hardwood. The tight grain and high oil content help it face all kind of weathers.
Yet, after years of outdoor exposition to the elements, its golden color can turn into a silvery gray patina.
Follow our tips if your want your teak furniture to restore its original look.

ANTIQUE OR NEW?

Natural patina teak wardrobe with two doors and two drawers

Some people love the antique silvery patina while other favor a golden-honey finish.

Before you embark on a course to treat your teak furniture, you need to choose the look you want.
Do you want a new golden honey tone, or a silvery patina?
Some people don’t enjoy the antique look and want to restore the original honey color.
Other are looking to speed-up the graying process. It’s up to your taste and needs.
The treatment is different depending on the look. Some processes can delay or even prevent the weathering process. Others will allow the weathering process to occur faster.
Please note that the patina look does not affect the lifetime or the structural integrity of the wood.

A beautiful patina.

Teak furniture is easy to clean, in particular if you want a silvery patina.
For a beautiful patina, all you need to do is a light cleaning once a year to remove the dirt and dust.

  1. To remove dust and dirt, clean your teak furniture with soapy water and a clean soft cloth. You can also use a standard mild detergent such as Woolite™.
  2. After cleaning your teak furniture, make sure you rinse it well and place it in the sun to decrease drying time.
  3. Clean the dry furniture with a dry cloth to remove any dust.

Repeat this simple process once a year, and that’s it. Your garden furniture is clean and will weather into a stunning silvery patina over time. How easy is this cleaning process?

Tips and warnings before you clean your antique furniture:

  • In most cases, a soap and water mixture is enough to clean your teak furniture. It will not interfere with the aging process.
  • You should not use harsh and abrasive cleaners to clean your teak furniture.
  • Some people try to weather the furniture by staining the wood. I don;t recommend it. The high oil content in the wood prevents stains from adhering, and the result will look messy. Stain is permanent and you cannot remove it without many sanding.

The original golden color.

Let’s see how we can prevent the natural graying process of teak furniture.
If you want your garden furniture go back to its original look, you can buy teak conditioners and cleaners at your local hardware store.
This process is simple and requires no scrubbing. A standard conditioner mixture will restore the golden honey look and remove all dirt, oil, graying and stains.

CARE ABOUT YOUR TEAK FURNITURE

grade a teak

Buy your furniture from a teak specialist.

Buy your furniture from specialists, so you get the best quality.
Every year before summer, big supermarkets sell cheap so-called teak furniture.
The price may be attractive but trust me, you don’t want to buy a cheap lounge chair that is going to be broken in 6 months. Like everything, you get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap sound system from a discount bazar shop, you know that you won’t listen to the best music quality.
Same goes for teak. Do you want to buy quality teak furniture? Talk to someone who understand what he is talking about, and is able to give you advises.

Once you bought you teak furniture, let’s follow some simple tips to help maintain it.

  • To avoid rot, do not leave teak furniture in shady areas.
  • At the end of the summer, cover your furniture or move it indoor.
  • Be careful when moving teak furniture indoor. Bringing the garden furniture into a heated space may cause the wood to split. Favor a gradual change in temperature and moisture levels. For example, move the furniture during Fall and not in the middle of Winter.

HOW TO OIL AND TREAT TEAK FURNITURE

oil teak with brush

To treat teak furniture, buffer the wood after oiling with a brush.

To protect the wood, apply oil once in a while.
Teak oil is a natural product that will not damage the wood.
Follow these simple steps to oil your teak furniture the right way.

  1. Before you apply the oil, clean the furniture with soapy water. Remove dirt and dust, and let it dry.
  2. When the furniture is dry, apply teak oil with a soft brush. Teak oil will add a layer of protection against water, sun, moisture and food stains.
  3. Let the wood dry completely. Apply a second coat.

Teak oil will slow down the aging process, and bring back the golden color. It will help keep your garden furniture in its original look.

Tips and warnings about teak oil:
Teak oil is flammable.

  • After you oil your teak furniture, soak the cloths in water.
  • Don’t smoke while applying the oil.
  • Don’t oil your garden furniture next to a fire zone such as a barbecue.
  • Don’t allow children next to the Teak oil.

HOW TO SAND YOUR TEAK FURNITURE THE RIGHT WAY

sanding and treat teak furniture

Prevent stain and maintain old teak furniture like a professional by sanding the wood in a soft way.

To remove stubborn stains such as wine, you can also sand the surface in a smooth way.
Let’s discover the step-by-step process to sand your teak furniture.

  1. Remove the dust with a soapy water and soft cloth. Let the furniture dry for 24 hours.
  2. Sand off oxidation with a soft sandpaper. There is no need to sand deeply. A soft sanding will restore the original look.
  3. Wipe away sanding dust with a dry cloth.
  4. Clean again with soapy water.
  5. Allow the teak wood to dry for another 24 hours.
  6. Brush a thin layer of teak oil with a standard paintbrush. Try to follow the grain pattern.
  7. Allow the oil to dry for one hour.
  8. Apply a second coat.
  9. Remove residual oil with a soft cloth by buffing the wood in circular motions.

That’s it! Your teak furniture looks like new and is smooth to the touch.
The occasional sanding and oiling helps the teak furniture to keep the wood moisture at proper levels. It prevents rot, splitting cracking, and keep stains from marking the surface.

Tips and warning about sanding:
Follow the grain pattern, because cross-grain sanding may leave unwanted marks.
You can use a soft sanding wedge available at your local hardware store. It will help you reach tricky spaces and areas.

TREAT YOUR TEAK FURNITURE WITH CARE.
Teak furniture is famous for its golden color and exceptional weather resistance.
High oil content allows teak wood to endure climate changes well.
Occasional and proper cleaning will help teak furniture to age in a nice way or to restore the original hue.

Why is Teak the best wood ever?

There is a lot of misconceptions about Teak wood.
Here are interesting facts about teak that you didn’t know.

Myths about Teak wood

Let’s debunk the myths about Teak wood.
If you are a timber specialist you already know why teak is one of the most sought-after of all premium woods. People love its golden color and its resistance to rot.
But there is still a lot of misconceptions about teak furniture.

Here at My Own Bali we have a genuine love for teak. We love the grain, the feel, the touch, and we even love the smell of it. It makes us pretty sad to hear people say bad things about our beloved timber, because their claims are not even true.
Let’s debunk some myths and learn some simple facts about our teak wood.

THE BUSINESS OF TEAK FURNITURE HARMS THE ENVIRONMENT

teak tree farming

Some people say that teak production hurts Nature. It’s not true. Furniture uses teak wood coming from sustainable farming. Here is a picture of a plantation in Asia.

Our teak comes from legal plantations.

Some people think that buying teak furniture contributes to deforestation and destroy the environment.
In the past decades global warming and extensive logging have threatened old teak forests.
But despite what you may think, teak furniture has now became an ecological business.
True teak (called Tectona Grandis) cannot survive in the jungle. The tree grows in dry and hilly terrains, in Southeast Asia.
To keep up sustainability, teak farming is now regulated. The hardwood used in furniture comes from tree farms. This is not a new trend. The first teak plantations appeared in Burma more than 160 years ago.
Once again, the wood we use for our furniture does not come from natural forests. It comes from legal government plantations.

Teak furniture is energy-efficient.

When you buy a plastic chair, polluting factories process synthetic resins to produce plastic.
They make the resins by heating chemical materials. They process the resins again to produce the plastic furniture.
We don’t use chemicals to build our teak furniture.
The wood comes from regulated farmed trees, without need for chemicals or manufacturing.
Plastic bottles and metal cans pollute our oceans and natural landscapes. Scraps leftovers from wood production return to the earth without damage to the environment.
Organic by nature, Teak oil is bitter and repels insects. This natural-quality makes teak an ecological option, because there is no need for insecticides.
Teak trees grow without artificial fertilizers or heavy irrigation. Time just make its work. Plantations are a renewable and sustainable.
Next time you think about buying teak furniture, remember it’s an ethical investment.

QUALITY TEAK IS ALSO HARVESTED IN AFRICA

Deforestation Nigeria

Thanks to unregulated exploitation and corruption, Nigeria has lost 81 percent of its Greenland.

Do you know the ugly truth hidden behind African teak?
Pericopsis Elata or Afrormosia is the scientific name for “African teak”.
Various countries such as Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana or Congo, produce “African teak”.
Cheaper production and better margin costs attract some furniture entrepreneurs to Africa.
Let’s see what is wrong with “African teak”.

“African teak” is not teak.

The tree is a timber species that belongs to the Fabaceae family.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) make sure that international trade does not threaten the survival of the species in the wild.
CITES ranks “African teak” illegal logging and unregulated trade Appendix II.

African teak is an ecological time bomb.

Production of “African teak” is not controlled.
“African teak” causes serious environmental problems of deforestation, habitat loss and puts the species at risk of extinction.
Alongside animal species such as the Great White Shark, “African teak” will soon be extinct in the wild, unless its trade stops or becomes subject to stricter regulation.

ETHICAL BUSINESS.
When you buy teak furniture, don’t forget to ask where the material comes from, and where they harvested it.
Quality teak wood do not come from Africa. The trees that come from African countries destroy our planet.
Teak trees are grown in Southeast Asia and in some plantations in Central America under warm and humid weather.
