Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi wood charring burnt furniture manufacturing.
We manufactured a series of wood burnt furniture for a shop located in Japan.
For this furniture series, we used the Shou Sugi Ban wood finishing technique.
Shou Sugi Ban is also known as Yakisugi. It is an age-old technique used in Japan to preserve the wood. For centuries, wood workers were charring Japanese cedar wood. The fire preserves and gives the wood a longer life. The technique is ecological and friendly to the environment. It needs no chemicals or solvents. The process starts by burning the wood surface. You can burn the wood to various degrees of char to achieve different looks. The longer you burn the wood and the darker it becomes.
After we finish to burn the wood, we can brush it to open the wood grains. A clear coating is also possible and will achieve a different result. Shou Sugi Ban offers many wood finishing options.
The wood finishing technique is straightforward. In ancient days, Japanese wood workers would put tree cedar planks together. They would join the boards in a standing position. They would then light a fire below the wood boards standing in a triangle shape. The wood would burn inside this tunnel fireplace for up to 15mn. Today, we use gas burners for more precision and flexibility. We burn the teak with a propane torch flame until we are happy with the wood finish. With gas burners, the burning process also takes 10 to 15mn per plank. After we char the wood, we spray it with water to cool it down. We then let the wood dry under the sun or inside our finishing oven. After the teak wood is dry, we start to brush it. Brushing the Yakisugi wood allows us to create more finishing looks. We can make the furniture look black like a charcoal. We can also play with a mix of natural teak wood with slight burnt layer. Between the two, we can create several hues of dark browns. Shou Sugi Ban is a creative wood finish process. It allows many results and all comes down to personal tastes and feels. Once we clean the charcoal dust, we let the teak planks dry again. Burnt wood doesn’t need any extra finish. It needs no chemical preservatives and no paints. Depending on the furniture use, we can use wood sealants or teak oils.
