HOW TO FIX A FENCE POST.
A beautiful fence is the pride of every home owner.
Learn the correct way to repair a fence post.
Items you will need:
- A spirit level.
- A shovel.
- A hammer.
- Nails
- Concrete (buy the quick-set bag from your local DIY store).
First you will need to establish why your garden fence post is loose. To do this you will need to:
- Use the shovel to dig around the base of the fence post. Digging allows you to see whether the post has snapped, rotted away or it’s not concreted in the proper way.
If the post is rotten, please read the next section: How to fix rotten fence posts. - Use the spirit to level the fence post.
- Stabilize the post into its new position. Nail some wood to the ground around the post and place a heavy object on top to help hold the balance.
- Prepare your concrete (follow the bag’s instruction) and pour it into the fence post hole.
- Check that the post remains leveled and adjust it.
- Remove the scrap wood.
Make sure the concrete base isn’t straight. You don’t want the rainwater to settle at the base because it can cause the post to rot.
HOW TO FIX ROTTEN FENCE POSTS.
Fixing a rotten fence is harder than it sounds. With patience, perseverance and the proper guidance you can do it.
Items you will need:
- A spirit level.
- A new post.
- A shovel.
- A power hammer drill with chisel, or concrete breaker.
- A string line.
- Concrete.
Instructions:
- Use the shovel to dig around about two feet deep around the fence post.
- Break up the concrete with the hammer drill.
- Remove the old concrete and pull out the rotten post.
- Place the string line across from post to post along your garden fence. This will help you line up the new posts.
- Place the new fence posts along the string line.
- Nail wood to the ground to close the holes and stabilize the posts.
- Pour the concrete into the holes.
- Check the posts level.
- Remove the scrap wood.
Pour pea gravel into the hole to allow drainage and avoid rot.
HOW TO REPLACE A LEANING FENCE POST.

The most common causes of a leaning fences are:
- The hole for the base is too shallow.
- The base is rotten or broken.
- Bad quality warped wood.
- Bad weather such as strong wind.
Fix your fence post if possible, rather than replacing them. Replacing posts can stress the boards attached to the other posts.
How to fix a post with a shallow base.
For every 3ft of fence post, there should be a depth of 18 inches.
- Check the depth of your hole with a measuring tape.
- Dig the appropriate depth to allow proper maintenance and give your fence a longer life.
- Place your fence post in the deeper hole. Make sure the level is correct.
- Fill the bases with concrete.

How to fix a post damaged because of bad weather.
If you fence leans after a strong wind or a heavy snowfall, this mean the underground base has come loose. It may also mean that the hole was too shallow for your garden fence.
To fix the loose fence,
- Line a string line across the intact posts and bring it over the leaning post. This will show where the proper height should be.
- Dig around the leaning fence post and check if it is damaged.
- If your garden fence is intact, dig further.
- Align the leaning posts with the string line and close the hole with the ground you dug.
