ONE WOOD, MANY NAMES.
People know Suar wood under many names .
The botanical names of Suar wood are Saman Samanea, Inga Saman and Albizia Saman. In English we also call it Rain Tree, East Indian Walnut, Giant Thibet or Monkey Pod.
Most of the names we use to talk about “Saman” wood come from the Caribbean word “zamang”.

Why do we do huge table tops with Suar wood? Because Suar trees are giants.
A standard Suar tree is 25 meters tall. A Suar tree (with the branches) has a diameter of 40 meters.
No wonder we can produce giant furniture with such an amazing tree.

Suar trees have an amazing characteristic.
Do you know why some people call it Rain Tree, or “Five 0’Clock Tree” (Pukul Lima in Malay)? During the rainy season, every evening around 5pm, all the leaves fold. This allow the rain to reach the ground around the tree during all night. At sunset, all leaves unfold. It gives the wet floor shadow and keeps the ground wet.
This technique irrigates the roots. You can often find a green circle of grass around rain trees.

SIZE MATTERS.
Here is our little guideline to help you choose the best size for your Suar furniture.
Because we can design huge bespoke furniture with Suar wood, some people get a bit lost. What size would look great? How long should this dining table be?
Follow our tips to choose the best size for your Suar furniture.
For furniture narrower than 40cm, we recommend a thickness of 2 to 4cm. This depends of the furniture width. The right thickness will give your furniture balance and stability.
For standard Suar shelves, use a thickness between 2 and 4cm.
For all furniture less than 2 meters-long and between 40 and 50cm wide, we recommend a thickness of 8cm or more. The thickness allows your furniture to look great and be strong.
For standard items such as coffee tables or Suar benches, use a thickness of 8cm or more.
For all furniture above 2-meters long and up to 110cm wide, we recommend a thickness of 10cm or more.
For long items such as Suar table tops or bars, use a thickness of 10cm or more.
WE MANUFACTURE QUALITY SUAR FURNITURE.
To make sure that we offer the best construction, we add metal dowels in all our long items.
For long Suar furniture such as 2 meters table tops or 2,50 meter bars, we insert metal dowels on the right and left sides. The dowels are between 80 and 100cm long for a diameter of 3cm.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
If Suar furniture don’t see enough sun during a couple of years, a black layer can appear on the surface. Don’t panic.
This blackish layer is easy to remove. All you need to do is rubbing the surface with a dry cloth. That’s it, the back layer is gone!
To remove the back layer you don’t need expensive products, rubbing is enough.
Because of it’s size, Suar wood has a high moisture content.
Even after we put the wood in a kiln dry oven, Suar normal moisture content is still higher than 30%. With time, and even with the perfect construction, cracks can appear on big table tops. This is one of the characteristic of Suar wood. Most of our customers ask us to sell them table-tops with cracks. Cracks gives the furniture a vintage look.
